My wife has a couple of friends who have daughters that have gone to other countries to teach english as a second language. They find it a great way to travel and earn at the same time.
Choosing Thailand as the country to complete a TEFL course is a very smart decision. The lack of certified English teachers in the country means that they go out of their way to take care of you, as they see learning the English language as essential to their hopes of growing economically. you may make Thailand your permanent home after being welcomed into the country warmly. TEFL teachers won’t be worked to exhaustion as the Thai way of life is relaxed, and outside of work hours you can relax on the glorious beaches.
Deciding to teach English as a foreign language in a different country is a big and brave step. When going to a foreign country it is important that you feel as though you will be supported with everything from socialising to plumbing problems, getting paid and issues with your employer. You can be sure of support if you work with a good TEFL organisation.
Staying in one of the larger areas of Thailand would be advisable as you have more opportunities to meet other TEFL teachers and choices of where to teach. For example, you can choose between language schools, home teaching, general schools and more. There are also more activities for you to fill your time off with. The larger cities like Phuket and the capital Bangkok have so much going on that you will never be short of something to do. If you are more of a sun junkie staying by the coast will let you enjoy the water sports, diving and swimming that Thailand has to offer.
You need to make sure that you will be teaching with a school equipped to employ TEFL teachers. Look for schools that the Thai Ministry of Education has approved to offer TEFL courses so that you can be sure you are working with a trustworthy agency. You can get some good benefits like cheaper accommodation, a mode of transport and social events for fellow teachers when you work with a good TEFL agency.
