Explore Lanzarote, The Island Of Fire
There are plenty of hot holiday destinations around the world. But few boast the dramatic and surreal scenery of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. Forged by the fire and heat of massive volcanic eruptions which rocked the island for over six years during the 1730’s.
Lanzarote is located just off the coast of West Africa and along with the six other Canary Islands is one of the most visited regions in Spain. Boasting great weather all year round, as well as excellent beaches and good quality accommodation.
Winter is one of the best times to explore this unique little island. As it is less crowded than during the summer months and the cost of flights to Lanzarote much lower. With some of the biggest carriers such as Ryanair offering returns for as little as £9.99.
Lanzarote’s Volcanic Region
This region is known locally as the Fire Mountains and it is the most popular tourist attraction.
Little wonder considering how the landscape here really is out of this world. Formed by mile after mile of solidified lava punctuated by spent and exhausted volcanoes.
Indeed the scenery here is so dramatic that it has been used as a backdrop by numerous film-makers. Such as the Spanish director Pedro Almodovar who shot some of his latest release Broken Embraces on location here.

The Fire Mountains
Away from this eerie interior Lanzarote is blessed with close to a hundred beaches. Some of which – such as the set of sandy coves at Papagayo – are regarded as amongst the best in the Canaries.
The many creations of a local artist called César Manrique also figure highly on most visitor’s itineraries. As he worked in harmony with Lanzarote´s twisted terrain to create a number of unique attractions. Such as the Jameos del Agua – where he transformed a massive empty tube in the lava flow into an underground nightclub, concert venue and tropical gardens.
This was his first major project on Lanzarote in the late 1960´s and the Jameos really helped to put the island on the international travel map. Winning plaudits worldwide and attracting VIP visitors such as the actors Peter Sellers and Omar Sharif.
There are plenty of accommodation options for anyone planning to visit the island this winter. The widest choice of Lanzarote villas and hotels can be found in the south in the resort of Playa Blanca. Where tourists are also likely to experience the best possible weather – thanks to the island’s pronounced microclimate.
Lanzarote is also very easy to tour – as it only measures around 60km by 40km. Making it possible to drive from end to end in around one hour. Whilst car hire in Lanzarote is also very affordable – with prices starting at €90 for a week’s rental.

Discovering Lanzarote is a big adventure, the island has lots to offer apart from the sandy beaches and resorts. There is the famous Club La Santa offering fantastic sports training facilities, the world’s toughest Ironman is here in May, we constantly have groups of cyclists training on our hills and against our wind. In the water you have fantastic conditions for windsurfing in Costa Teguise and surfing along the coast of Famara. When the conditions are right, there is paragliding of the cliffs of Famara or the over Mirador de Haría. Have you started your adventure in Lanzarote?
