My Dad Always Said, It’s Better To Be Safe Than Sorry

I didn’t start paying attention to health or injuries that happen while travelling or on vacation until my parents started getting older and wintering in Florida.

Dad had a heart attack about the 5th year they went to Florida for the winter and it was the last year they went without the proper medical coverage.

For most of us we don’t think about the risks involved in travelling away from home for our vacations. I guess we tend to think it won’t happen to us, until it’s too late.

I don’t want to sound morbid but sometimes it does actually happen to me and not the other guy and all of a sudden we have medical expenses that can ruin not just our vacation but it can put us in  a whole lot of debt.

Even a small brake could cost you a lot of money as it all depends on where you are travelling to.

A Smart Traveller Gets Travel Insurance.

The best thing to do is to go and get travel insurance as this will protect you against nearly everything that could possible go wrong abroad including breaks and if the worst comes to it will provide family with a large sum of money if a death occurs on holiday.

Other things that are covered are:

  • Cover for lost or stolen passports
  • Cover for emergency medical expenses
  • Cancellation cover
  • Lost luggage is possible to be covered for
  • Your own money

Travel insurance could really benefit you if something goes wrong on holiday which is something that nobody expects but sadly does happen from time to time.

Of course if you are thinking of getting a car out there make sure you get out some car hire insurance to make sure that if something goes wrong there you have everything you need covered. As well as this if you are taking your own car and own a Sat Nav it is also possible to now get that insured with Sat Nav insurance so that even if that breaks on you it can be repaired with no extra cost at all to you.

Purchasing a medical care plan when you are planning a trip overseas is important, in case you become sick or injured. Many travelers don’t realize that traditional insurance plans may not cover emergencies that occur overseas. You can protect yourself from unforeseen situations by purchasing a visitors medical insurance plan before leaving on your trip.

The traveler’s budget and current health situation will help to establish the level of coverage available in visitor insurance plans. Policies that have higher deductibles for emergency care are the best for budget-conscious travelers, while other plans also offer coverage for your return back to the US in an emergency and other valuable benefits.

The coverage provided in most visitors health insurance plans includes emergency care, including hospital stays and medically necessary tests and services. These plans are not designed to be used for routine services, such as physicals and dental care.

Consider what kind of coverage would be best for you needs when comparing visitors medical insurance plans. There are often various levels of coverage and costs associated with each plan. Look at the details of the coverage for each plan, taking into consideration any discounts offered for senior citizens or student travelers.

Visitors health insurance can protect you and family from emergencies when travelling overseas. You may be more susceptible to different illnesses or injury in a new environment. In the event that you are faced with a stressful medical condition when traveling overseas, you can feel confident that you will be covered with insurance protection.

The various visitor insurance plans available vary by coverage offered and cost. Some plans have important additions that can save you money, like trip cancellation insurance and discounts. Enjoy your overseas travel with medical insurance and don’t worry about unexpected health emergencies, no matter if you are travelling for work, school, or pleasure. With visitors insurance, you will be protected from unexpected medical costs.

When Holidays Go Wrong

how to spend a sick day

Millions of people travel abroad each year looking for clear blue skies, white beaches and great weather. For many, they enjoy their holiday and are suitably relaxed and ready for the work once more. However, for some dream holidays can quickly turn into a nightmare as accidents can easily occur if you are not careful or are unfortunate enough to be staying in below standard accommodation.

Illness and Sickness

One of the most common problems on holiday is illness. A significant number of us get ill at some point during our holidays but most put it down to not being customised to the local cuisine. However, Salmonella and E-Coli are found in restaurants and cafes that do not met the necessary health and safety standards. If this is the case then you may be entitled to compensation.

If there are other people you may have met also fell ill after eating at the same restaurant then get a signed statement from them which will support your case. To try and avoid food poisoning get a feel for a restaurant or cafe first, now it will be hard to walk into the kitchen and inspect it but if the main restaurant area is not clean there is a good chance the kitchen area won’t be either.

Slips and Falls

Another frequent holiday accident claim is from slips and falls which can occur due to a number of reasons. The main one has to be in hotels where wet floors from people being in the swimming pool are common occurrence. Balconies are also a dangerous accessory to a hotel room if they are not secured and maintained to a sufficient standard. Wherever there are wet floors, there should be signs telling you so. Failure to do so and you get seriously injured would mean you are entitled to compensation.

Slips and falls are common on holidays with the majority being minor. However, if you are seriously injured take a few pictures of the area you fell to show there were no signs and keep any medical bills you had to pay (if medical assistance was required). Do your best to avoid slipping by keeping your wits about you, wet floors are everywhere in hotels especially so walk and don’t run.

Adventure activities

Many people like some adventure of their holidays so activities such as jet-skiing and scuba diving are ideal as they are great fun and good to cool down from the heat. However, these types of activities to pose some risk and if you are unfortunate enough to get injured from them, compensation may be available.

Take care on your holiday but if you are unfortunate enough for anything to happen such as illness or injury then consider your options as there may be grounds to make a holiday accident claim.

Holiday Insurance Tips For Seniors

Health Insurance Forum
Image by Aaron Landry via Flickr

You’ve chosen your destination and may have even booked some bargain flights online, looking forward to your holiday, lying in the sun, sipping Sangria and soaking up the rays. But are you a senior traveler and have you arranged your over 64s travel insurance?

Travellers who are over 64 years old can often encounter difficulty obtaining travel insurance. Many insurance providers are less keen to offer travel insurance to people over the age of 64 for a number of reasons. They obviously don’t want to take unnecessary risks. Ideally, they will sell their travel insurance policies and no one will actually make a claim on them. But senior travelers mean additional risks for insurers due to possibly failing health, pre-existing medical conditions and the effects of aging.

So if you are a senior traveler what can you do? it is most important that you don’t leave it too late. Start to look around for your travel insurance cover as soon as possible. The longer you leave it the harder it will be to find the policy that you need.

Always start by contacting your existing insurance provider. If you already have some life insurance or health insurance it is worthwhile contacting your existing insurance provider and enquiring as to whether they can provide senior travel insurance. And if you have a pre-existing medical condition find out if they provide pre-existing medical condition travel insurance.

Always shop around. Even if you are provided with quotes from your current insurance provider take the figures and look around for a cheaper alternative. There are some experienced senior insurance providers who may be able to beat the prices quoted by other, non-specialist providers.

Once you have found a policy and provider that you are happy with why not consider purchasing multi-trip travel insurance. Save yourself time and aggravation by taking out a multi-trip travel insurance policy that will cover your next holiday as well.

Whatever you do, always be honest and open with your prospective travel insurance provider. Don’t lie about your age, your health or any pre-existing medical conditions that you might have. And makre sure you have a great holiday.
