Top Balearic Waterparks for the Family

Imperial Palace Waterpark Resort & Spa, Cebu

If you are heading out on recession beating family holidays to any of the Balearics this year, try to make sure you get yourself over to one of these awesome waterparks. There is nothing more enjoyable than cooling off in a water park, especially when the sun is blazing. Its also quite a fun way to cool down.

Aqualand – Magaluf, Mallorca
This park is large.  With more thank 15 slides and many other attractions, if you’re visiting Majorca and are in the west of the island you need to visit this park.  From unique slides like the boomerang, black hole and the tornado to the super slaloms and the 8 lane ‘multi-pistas’ there is an attraction for all. They even have a wave pool that can create 1m high waves, also there is a Congo river ride for the people that just want to relax.  For the younger children there is the mini park catering in smaller versions of some of the grown up slides

Hidropark – Alcudia, Mallorca
In the east of the island you have the Hidropark in Alcudia.  Hidropark is much smaller than the Aqualand but not short of slides. If you really want to make a splash take a trip on the kamikaze, this attraction is not for the faint hearted.  This park has nothing on Aqualand so if it’s in your budget, I would try to get to the other side of the island and experience the sheer size of the Aqualand.

Aguamar – Playa den Bossa, Ibiza

The White Isle has two worthy waterparks the first, and larger of the two is the Aguamar located just 15 minute bus drive from Ibiza town.  The Aguamar has many slides all will depend how daring you are feeling in your quest to cool down.  There are around seven types of slides as well as your relaxing rubber ring style slides. They also offer have what other people describe as the high and fast one.  This slide is definitely one for the daring.

Agualandia – Talamanca, Ibiza
Close by to the quieter and more family oriented resort of Talamanca lies Aqualandia.  Aqualandia is smaller than the Aguamar and caters more for children with many more children’s slides and lots of sheltered areas.Aqualandia has the very fun twisty inflatable slides and also the multiple lane slides. This is the most family friendly waterpark in Ibiza.

Aquacenter – Los Delfines, Menorca

Family friendly Aquacenter in Los Delfines has many attractions for the whole family to get splashing.  The main highlights of this park are the Black Hole and the Giant Toboggan. They also have the rides that all water parks have like multi lane slides for the whole family to race to the finish. For the adults there is also a Jacuzzi area to be away from the childrens areas.

Aquarock – Cala’n Bosch, Menorca
The biggest slide in Aquarocks is kamikaze. For anyone adventurous, this slide will pummel you into the water at a cracking rate.As with the rest of the parks in this article, this one also caters for the family. It has a dedicated children’s area with many smaller versions of the bigger slides. As well as the waterpark there is even go kart if you prefer to stay dry.

Quality Inns accept any well-behaved pets with a maximum of 3 per room, but dogs are limited to 50 pounds. They do not currently require a veterinarian certificate. Sheraton hotels within North America will welcome dogs as guests into their hotels, in accordance with local health codes. W Hotels will also welcome cats. These hotels will pamper pooches with luxurious custom pet beds and other amenities, such as floor mats, food bowls, ID tags, and more. All guests checking in with a dog will receive a “welcome kit” to include information on nearby areas for exercise and other goodies to help make traveling with your dog more enjoyable.

Some pet friendly accommodations may require an extra per night charge and/or a deposit. There is a weight limit of 80 pounds (40 pounds at Westin). However, dogs exceeding the weight limit and pets other than dogs may be accepted into the hotel at the General Manager’s discretion. Additional restrictions may apply and full hotel details are available upon request.

The hotel reserves the right to charge guest’s account commensurate to the cost of such damages.

La Quinta has over 350 pet-friendly locations from coast to coast. Cats and dogs up to 50 pounds are accepted in all guest rooms (unless prohibited by law). Housekeeping services for rooms with pets require pet owner be present or pet must be crated. No fees or deposits are required.

Our Favourite UK Hotels

This article was sent in by Chris Laskett of New Orleans.

We’re just back from a visit to the UK, our third in the last few years and I thought that I’d mention a few of the great uk hotels that we stayed in during our latest trip. There is so much to see and do in the wonderful cities of the British Isles, each of them offers history and tradition going back thousands of years. Add in the other advantage that they converse in a language not unlike our own and that a museum or art gallery can be visited in case of inclement weather and we have the recipe for a truly awesome holiday. We’re certain that you’d enjoy visiting the UK, but would always advise US citizens to check with the U.S. Department of State Advice to Travelers website whilst planning international travel.

Edinburgh, Scotland

You can be assured of a friendly welcome in the wonderful city of Edinburgh. This compact city is situated on the East Coast of Scotland and consists of the Old Town including the Royal Mile and the New Town, with the two halves separated by the line of Princes Street. The University of Edinburgh dates back to 1582 and its colleges, museums and galleries are distributed around the city. There are a number of exhibits open to the general public, check their web site for opening times.

During the Summer Edinburgh welcomes thousands of tourists attending its festivals. The Edinburgh International Festival runs for four weeks and showcases music, dance, theatre and opera. Running beside it is the famous “Fringe”, which typically offers over 25,000 performances in over 250 different venues all over the city. With that many widely varying shows from which to choose (with a very high percentage of world premieres) including theatre, comedy, ballet, shows for the children and many musical concerts there is something for everybody. There is in addition, the Literary Festival, the Blues & Jazz Festival and the Edinburgh International Film Festival that run throughout the summer here.

Since we only had two days in the city we were determined to be a trifle extravagant and stay in one of the most famous hotels in Scotland, The Edinburgh Scotsman Hotel. This wonderful old hotel can be found plumb in the middle of many of the city’s finest attractions and places including Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood House, The Royal Mile and the National Gallery of Scotland are all within easy walking distance. As previously mentioned the decision had been made to spoil ourselves by staying at this world famous hotel and everything that we had hoped for came true.

Birmingham, England

One of the main highlights of our latest visit to the UK was a planned visit to the Crufts Dog Show which is held in the NEC Arena in Birmingham, the UK’s second city. Spread over 4 days, it’s the world’s leading dog show. Last Year 143,000 visitors witnessed competition between over 25,000 dogs from 26 countries in the show rings. Another great attraction at the show is the Discover Dogs section where examples from 190 different breeds of dog are present with their owners, giving visitors an opportunity to question the owners and find the breed that will make the perfect pet for them. Since we were only going to Crufts, rather than exploring the city of Birmingham we took the decision to book a hotel close to the NEC exhibition centre. On this occasion we were not expecting one of the world’s top hotels, more a place to get a good night’s sleep after a hard day walking around that vast complex admiring dogs of all shapes and sizes. We booked into the Crowne Plaza NEC which is situated inside the grounds of the National Exhibition Centre. The hotel was exactly what you’d expect, clean, bright and completely impersonal. There was nothing to complain about and we’d happily use it again when visiting concerts or exhibitions at the NEC.

London, England

London was our final port of call on the latest trip. If you’ve never seen London you honestly do need to comprehend the sheer size of the city. It has grown and grown outwards over the years and it’s essential that you make up your mind precisely what you want to visit during your trip else you’ll be spending all of your time traveling on buses and the London underground and let me tell you, that’s not something to look forward to. Our agenda for this final few days of our trip was to get in some retail therapy i.e. shopping. To that end we resolved to stay in the Knightsbridge area with its huge numbers of chic, world famous stores such as Harrods. We booked into the Knightsbridge Sheraton Park Tower in ultra-stylish Knightsbridge. The Sheraton Park Tower is one of the capital’s most famous hotels, known for its “One-O-One” restaurant, London’s best fish restaurant.  The hotel offers tremendous views over the London skyline with many rooms overlooking Hyde Park In addition to the host of exciting shops, you will find many of the city’s best museums and landmarks within a short distance of the hotel.

There are a large variety of travel accommodation options available for people traveling with their pets, as well as a number of search engines available to find pet friendly hotels where ever you might be traveling. Some motel chains tend to be pet friendly.  However, since not all hotels or motels in a chain don’t necessary have the same owner, not all locations will be dog friendly. There are a variety of pet friendly hotel that you can look into if you are going to be traveling with your dog.

An example of pet friendly accommodations include the Motel 6 chain, with most of the motels in this chain allowing dogs. Your pets need to be attended at all time, and only one well behaved pet is allowed per room. Dogs must be kept on leashes throughout your stay, and must be declared when you check in. You also need to be considerate and clean up after your pets.

One of the largest chains of dog friendly hotels is Best Western. They have over 1,800 locations that allow dogs, including over 1,000 in the US and  Canada. You need to book ahead of time and double check the pet policy, as these may vary from hotel to hotel in the chain. For example, in San Francisco the pet must be under 50 pounds and attended at all times or kennelled, and the guests must stay in a standard room on the first floor. However, in the San Diego Mission Bay location dogs must be under 25 pounds. There is $20 non refundable deposit per night, the dogs can’t be left alone, and they must be walked with a leash.

Other dog friendly hotel chains include:

America’s Best Value Inn
Clarion Inn & Suites
Comfort Inn & Suites
Comfort Suites
Country Inn
Courtyard by Marriott
EconoLodge
Fairfield Inn by Marriott
Kimpton
La Quinta Inns and Suites
Mainstay Suites
Marriott Hotels & Resorts
Novotel
Quality Inn
Radisson
Red Roof Inn
Renaissance Hotels & Suites
Rodeway Inn
Sleep Inn
Spring Hill Suites by Marriott
Studio 6
Suburban Extended Stay Hotels
TownePlace Suites by Marriott

Whichever hotel or motel chain you are interested in staying at, be sure to check out the pet policy of the specific hotel you are considering. Not all hotels or motels in a chain have the same policy, and policies are continually changing, so it is hard for the pet friendly databases to keep up with them.  You may also want to think about pet insurance. One excellent and regularly updated resource is the PetTravel.com database.

Are you planning on a vacation? Are you also planning to take your favorite pet with you? If so, you should know that most motels and hotels have a no pet admission policy, and therefore will not allow you to lodge there. However, you don’t need to worry as there many pet friendly hotels located throughout the world which are more than willing to solve your problem.
