My Dad Always Said, It’s Better To Be Safe Than Sorry

I didn’t start paying attention to health or injuries that happen while travelling or on vacation until my parents started getting older and wintering in Florida.

Dad had a heart attack about the 5th year they went to Florida for the winter and it was the last year they went without the proper medical coverage.

For most of us we don’t think about the risks involved in travelling away from home for our vacations. I guess we tend to think it won’t happen to us, until it’s too late.

I don’t want to sound morbid but sometimes it does actually happen to me and not the other guy and all of a sudden we have medical expenses that can ruin not just our vacation but it can put us in  a whole lot of debt.

Even a small brake could cost you a lot of money as it all depends on where you are travelling to.

A Smart Traveller Gets Travel Insurance.

The best thing to do is to go and get travel insurance as this will protect you against nearly everything that could possible go wrong abroad including breaks and if the worst comes to it will provide family with a large sum of money if a death occurs on holiday.

Other things that are covered are:

  • Cover for lost or stolen passports
  • Cover for emergency medical expenses
  • Cancellation cover
  • Lost luggage is possible to be covered for
  • Your own money

Travel insurance could really benefit you if something goes wrong on holiday which is something that nobody expects but sadly does happen from time to time.

Of course if you are thinking of getting a car out there make sure you get out some car hire insurance to make sure that if something goes wrong there you have everything you need covered. As well as this if you are taking your own car and own a Sat Nav it is also possible to now get that insured with Sat Nav insurance so that even if that breaks on you it can be repaired with no extra cost at all to you.

Jet lag is a normal part of traveling by plane, but you can take steps to greatly reduce its impact on your life. If you plan ahead, you can prevent or treat jet lag quickly so you can enjoy the rest of your trip.

Preventing Jet Lag

If you know about your trip well in advance, you can start to shift your sleep-wake cycle even before you get there. Look up the time zone of the location you are traveling to and start waking up earlier or going to sleep later depending on where you are traveling.

Once you get on the plane, be sure to set your watch to your new destination. Once the sun goes down in your destination, try to get some sleep. Use headphones, eye masks and ear plugs so you can get some rest. This will help you set your body to the time in you new location. The same goes for staying awake when it is day time in your new location. Read, watch a movie or listen to upbeat music to keep yourself awake.

Stay hydrated! Hydration is really important when it comes to avoiding jet lag. Being in the plane can be really dehydrating and jet lag can be exacerbated by dehydration. Ask for extra water when the beverage cart comes by or bring your own if you can. Be sure to avoid caffeine and alcohol because both of these can be very dehydrating.

Get up and walk around as often as you can. Keeping your muscles moving is a good way to keep your body awake when it needs to be. Do simple arm and leg stretches in your seat and walk to and from the bathroom often to exercise your legs.

Recovering from Jet Lag

If you follow the tips in the previous section and still end up with some jet lag, don’t despair. There are many steps that you can take to improve how you feel so you’re able to enjoy your trip more quickly.

When you get to your destination, try to stay awake if it is morning time. Drink a bit of caffeine to keep you going.

You should eat small snacks throughout the day until your internal clock adjusts to the new meal times. Don’t try to completely switch to the new meal schedule or you’ll find yourself very hungry between meals. Keep small snacks with you so you can eat when you need to.

If you are feeling very drowsy, take a nap in the afternoon. Make sure to limit your nap to an hour or two so you don’t completely throw off your new programming. Set your alarm and have a bit of caffeine after you wake up so you can adjust to your schedule.

Above all, don’t be too hard on yourself the first few days. If you follow these steps, you’ll have your schedule switched pretty well within 48 hours. Limit your activities for these first two days so that your body can adjust.

Flights To Cape Town From Miami

Cape Town Beach

If you want to fly from Miami to Cape Town South Africa you have three options to choose from. These are The South African Airways, Delta Airlines and British Airways. None of them offer a direct flight as they all have to stop at least twice before reaching their destination.

Some of the cities these flights fly via include Washington, Johannesburg, New York, Baltimore and Johannesburg. With each stop you have to switch flights but this is normal for long flights.

South African Airways

Destined for South Africa it leaves Miami at 13.25hrs and makes its first stop in Washington Dulles arriving at around 16.05hrs. After about 90 minutes it takes off this time heading for Johannesburg where it arrives at 15:50 the following day.

It then lives Johannesburg at 17:40 and flies to its final destination, Cape Town. It gets there at 19:50. The air flight to South Africa from Miami is about 20 hours long.

Delta Airlines

Departs from Miami heading for Baltimore at 0600hrs. It arrives there at 10:34 and takes off at 11:00 heading to New York, specifically to the JFK airport. Its scheduled to arrive at 12.10hrs and leave New York at 16.00hrs for Cape town.

This flight is longer than the South African Airways i.e. it’s a 23 hour flight.

British Airways

The British Airways departs from Miami at 20:50 and heads straight for London. It gets there the following day at 10:05.. The waiting period for the next connecting flight is quite long as it will leave London at 17.50 for Johannesburg

You can expect to arrive at 06.35 hrs the following day. You are then switched to another flight i.e. the SA317, which lives Johannesburg at 09:00 and gets to Cape Town at 11:10. The total flight time is about 21 hours – better than using Delta Airlines.

In terms of prices for air flights to Cape Town South Africa from Miami, the South Africa Airways is cheaper. For the latest in airfares and how you can make your travel bookings check out any of the following:

Hartford Hospital's LifeStar air ambulance pre...

If you are traveling to a foreign country whether for business or pleasure it is advisable to arrange suitable travel accident insurance plan cover and especially if you are contemplating any unusual sports activities. Travel accident insurance is designed to reimburse non-refundable trip deposits and payments, medical expenses, provide for emergency evacuation or repatriation, cover your personal belongings, baggage and travel delays.

Check the options list carefully before you take out the travel accident insurance because although some things you want covered may be extras plus there may be only low levels of cover with these.

By doing a little travel insurance comparisions initially, a little background knowledge of what’s available in the market place to cover travel and medical insurance is going to be a worthwhile effort on your part especially to have the knowledge that you are covered for all eventualities.

Some good advice is to visit the websites where you can find lists and information about various offers, then compare them, and choose the best ones to suit your needs.

It is not uncommon for your existing health insurance to make provision for some medical expenses when you are out of the country but travel accident insurance can provide a complete service (depending on the options you included) up to and including an emergency air ambulance etc. Your travel accident insurance should cater for other problems as well such as your baggage being lost or stolen, including personal effects, in addition to medical assistance that may require a special flight or other transportation.

Always ensure that a comprehensive travel accident insurance policy is exactly that and covers every situation, even where baggage is delayed and necessary items need to be replaced as well as 24hr medical assistance. To ensure complete coverage is part of your travel medical insurance, it is a good idea to check whether overnight hospital benefits are included, usually 0 per night, whenever the trip is outside Canada or the USA.

Unfortunately, it is sometimes necessary to make an insurance claim owing to an incident on vacation and it is important to contact the travel accident insurance firm at the earliest opportunity. When you return from your vacation, you will need to collect all your receipts, proof of ownership (where necessary) and any other relevant information collected from the Police or medical establishments and forward them all to the trip travel insurance company claims department to assist in an early settlement.

Working with your insurance company is far preferable to working against them as they can be of great help in a crisis and it is nice to have that peace-of-mind that when you return you won’t have further problems to deal with because you failed to inform them of what was happening. Choosing your travel accident insurance may at first seem a trivial matter but you can guarantee if anything untoward is going to happen, it will happen when you are on vacation in another country and where you will need comprehensive cover the most.

Dirt Cheap Airfare

In this age of high travel costs people are constantly in search of dirt cheap airfare.  Everyone has a budget they have to meet.  There are many ways to lower the cost of travel.

The rising price of fuel in mid-2008 prompted many airlines to begin charging for things that used to be free.  For example, some airlines began charging for a second checked in bag.  Many charge for even one piece of checked luggage.  People have to pay to sit near the window or aisle.  It’s now important to get a low fare in the first place.  Then once all these charges were added, at least it wasn’t breaking the bank.

The day of the dirt cheap airfare is not ended.  But consider that even after oil prices fell 50%, meaning the price of fuel fell as well, airlines did not end all of these extra charges.  In business prices rise quickly but fall slowly.  That’s simply the nature of business.

The reasons for the extra fees are known.  There are still ways to locate a dirt cheap airfare.  How can it be found?  The Internet is there to help.  Travel sites offer low fares from all the airlines.  It’s a good way to find the cheapest.

Sometimes the best place to find dirt cheap airfare is on the web sites maintained by the airlines.  Sometimes the airlines offer discounts to people who shop directly with them.  Therefore check out the airlines in addition to the other sites.  Sign up to receive emails for specials.

Some people put airline loyalty first.  They consider it the fastest method to achieve a dirt cheap airfare.  It isn’t the case.  Comparison results in savings for every trip.  It can be fun to walk onto the plane ahead of all the other passengers.  So keep flying with one airline.

Stay away from auction sites if you want dirt cheap airfare.  The secret of auctions is that people pay more than retail over 50% of the time.

So for a cheap family holiday get out there and find a dirt cheap airfare.
