Family Travel an Educational Vacation in Washington, D.C.

Posted in family travel by Webmann on December 22, 2007
One of the most popular destinations for students, especially in their senior year, is a trip to Washington, D.C.  Both educational and enjoyable, Washington, D.C. is filled with historic sites, galleries, museums, and is home to the most famous landmark of all – the White House.

If you are traveling to Washington, D.C. with your family, there are several places of interest you will want to take your kids to see.  Some are somber reminders of wars fought and lives lost, while others pose an inside look into the history of our country as displayed in the Smithsonian, Museum of Natural History, and the Museum of African Art.

As you step inside the US Capitol building, which is home to the Congress, and you can take the guided tour and perhaps sit in on a session.   In addition, a visit to the US Supreme Court and the Library of Congress are definite sites to be added to your list.  Your kids will be mesmerized by the fact that the Library of Congress has over 26 million books, documents, photographs, and films than any other library in the world.

The Lincoln Memorial is awesome as you walk up the steps to view the enormous statue of this beloved President, as well as the 19-foot bronze statue of Thomas Jefferson, our nation’s third President.

A visit to Arlington National Cemetery is recommended so that you can pay your respects to President Kennedy and his wife Jackie, as well as his brother Robert.  Another significant site to visit is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, WWII Memorial, Korean Memorial, and the Washington Monument.  Afterwards, you can walk by the White House and take a family photo.

Your family can also take a river cruise on the Potomac.  This is a wonderful day trip to Mount Vernon, another historic site and home of our first President, George Washington.

For a more interactive approach to sightseeing, the family can participate in an 18th century guided tour by lantern light through Alexandria, Va., which is a short distance from the DC area.  This 90-minute tour is a recreation of history as told by actors dressed in costume.   The kids will love the tales told and the stories about ghosts and ghouls.  Finally, a trip to Washington, D.C. would not be complete without a stop at the National Zoo.  Here, your family will view more than 400 different species of animals.

Washington, D.C. provides families who visit a long peek into the past, the present, and the future of our country.   It inspires kids who are interested in politics, and allows them to view first hand the inner workings of our government.  While your kids may have read all about the many sites in Washington, D.C., it is incredibly different when seeing it for the first time.

Colonial Williamsburg and Your Family

Posted in family travel by Webmann on December 21, 2007
In 1781, George Washington came to Williamsburg as Commander-in-Chief of the American army.  As a student at the College of William and Mary, Thomas Jefferson served as Governor of Virginia. Patrick Henry delivered his infamous line, “Give me liberty or give me death,” speech and was also Governor of Virginia.

On May 11 to May 13, 2007, Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown celebrated the 400th Anniversary of America.  Since all three cities in Virginia claimed they were the original birthplace of our great nation, it seemed only fair that all three celebrated this momentous occasion.

As visitors to Colonial Williamsburg, your family will become immersed in the rich heritage and historical significance of this city.  You will explore the many sites and sounds associated with Yorktown, were the last battle of the revolution took place; discover how the Indians, Europeans, and African Americans came together to form the US; and truly understand the words and ideas that embedded three unique and distinct words in the Constitution of the United States – freedom, equality, and independence.

Your family will learn about the revolution that spawned a free republic under the leadership of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.  Visit the College of William and Mary, which was attended by Thomas Jefferson.   In addition, you can take a local tour of the three cities: Jamestown, Yorktown, and Williamsburg where you will be transported back to the beginning of our country’s history and how the fight for freedom and equality led to where we are today.

Your kids will be enthralled by the Fifers and Drummers as they perform their unique skills.  More importantly, your kids will learn that only boys were allowed to become part of this regiment.  Today, however, both girls and boys are able to participate and continue the tradition of military music.  Equality rules!

In Colonial Williamsburg, your family will learn about life as it was over 400 years ago.  You will be able to meet people who lived during the revolution by participating in an interactive program.  This program includes people of historic towns who dress in costume and re-enact life as it was then.  You can visit the sites which have become treasure troves of historical and cultural data studied by history buffs and by those who wish to become American citizens.

In addition, there are some very special theme parks you can visit as well, including: Busch Gardens and Water County, where you can take park in the variety of water adventures available to your family.

Understanding the history of our country is as important as embarking on your family tree.  Colonial Williamsburg offers a glimpse into the past, and is not only a fun place to visit, but offers a unique educational experience your family will never forget.

Planning Your Holiday Travels Will Help Avoid Conflicts.

Posted in travel by Webmann on December 18, 2007
It can be great fun to spend the holidays with your family and friends, but there always seems to be a few people that you wish to avoid as well. Planning ahead can help you to avoid conflicts when you travel for the holidays. Remember that each person is entitled to their own thoughts and opinions. Agree to disagree on issues that pertain to politics and various types of controversial issues.

Everyone should take care of their own children during a gathering for the holidays. This is to prevent issues that arise when different parenting styles are in play. Make sure your children understand before you travel for the holidays that you expect them to follow the same rules they have at home regardless of what other children there will be allowed to do. This will help to prevent confusion and frustration for everyone involved in the gathering for the holidays.

In order to ensure everyone has a great time let those that will be in attendance help to place the events. Make sure someone is in charge of activities for the children to enjoy too. Take a look at the span of age groups that will be present at the event and either come up with activities for all of them to enjoy together or break them up into groups based on age.

Make sure everyone gets to take on a role for the holiday gathering that they will enjoy. This way the overall event will be a success and everyone will look forward to attending. Don’t leave certain people to clean up from the dinner or the activities just because you assume that is what they want to do. Knowing what your role is before you travel for the holidays allows you to be prepared for it.

Food is a common part of any holiday gathering but it can be a problem for some people. Before you travel for the holidays make sure the host is aware of any special foods you will need to have or to avoid. They can even offer dishes without meat for those that are on a vegetarian diet. Some people have an allergy to peanut oil or other foods though that need to be taken into consideration. Don’t wait until you arrive to tell them as it can mean foods they spent time preparing will have to be thrown out.

If you have an unresolved issue with someone that will be at the family gathering you should attempt to contact them prior to the event. This will help both of you to relieve the tension and anxiety over the situation. If it is something that can’t be resolved then ask them to agree to put your differences aside for the sake of everyone else that will be in attendance.

It doesn’t mean you have to become best friends at the event but don’t waste your energy being in conflict with the individual. Focus on the good memories that you can create for your family during the holidays instead. Too many families end up with parties missing for the gathering because they don’t want to attend if someone else is. Taking the high road so that everyone can enjoy their holiday more is an amazing gift you can give to them.

Adventure Travel: Bungy Jumping Clubs Around The World

Posted in adventure travel by Webmann on December 15, 2007
If you are a newcomer to the sport of bungy jumping and wish to find others who share your like minded interests, or if you’re a seasoned jumper who considers this sport to be one of your main passions, you may be interested in connecting with bungy clubs and their members.  As the popularity of this sport has become worldwide, so have the clubs which cater to bungy jumping enthusiasts!

In the United States, there are currently twenty-five states which have their own listed bungy clubs.  This is quite impressive for a sport which has only been in existence in its present form for the last two decades.  Some of these states boast more than one club;  California has the most, located in Sacramento, El Segundo, Alameda, and Los Gatos.  Canada presently lists five, located in British Columbia, Alberta, Ottawa, and two in Ontario.  If you are truly passionate about this sport, checking into these bungy jumping clubs is a great way to make your experiences even better.

If you wish to do a bit of traveling to join in with bungy jumping clubs, you can proceed to Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Guatemala, Colombia, Venezuela, or Ecuador.  Whether your interest in bungy clubs is for the jumping itself or interacting with other members, these clubs in Central America and South America will give you both benefits as well as broadening your horizons in very different geographical locales.

In the United Kingdom, many of the best bungy clubs are affiliated with the British Elastic Rope Sports Association in Oxford, England.  Endorsement by this Association assures you that the clubs have met and maintain specific standards, including the Code of Safe Practice.  In becoming involved with any of these clubs, you will know that your safety is their primary concern.  It is important to note that bungy jumping clubs in the United Kingdom are not required to be affiliated with the Association, and only those who are must adhere to their standards.  Therefore if you wish to become involved with bungy jumping clubs in the United Kingdom, it is a good idea to find out beforehand if the club you are interested in has been approved by the British Elastic Rope Sports Association.

In addition to those located in the United Kingdom, twenty-four other countries in Europe list bungy jumping clubs, as well as fourteen clubs in other locations.  If traveling will be a part of your bungy jumping experiences, becoming involved in the bungy jumping clubs in the areas you will visit will certainly add to your enjoyment.  In selecting foreign destinations in which to engage in your hobby, you can go beyond the sport to the extra fun of taking part in a new culture, sampling its cuisine, learning a new language, and, above all, having the opportunity to get to know many other people who share your interest in bungy jumping.  You may choose a club close to your own home, or you can make it an even more special treat by finding one to your liking on the opposite side of the globe!
