For many years, we would scrimp and save to go on vacation. We would calculate every last aspects – the cheapest way to get there, the cheapest place to stay, the cheapest way to eat, and the cheapest activities. It is not that we wouldn’t spend money on anything, but we would definitely cut out all unnecessary luxuries. When you have five children, vacations can get expensive, especially if you are a single income family. Apparently, we were taking the wrong approach. Cheap package holidays saved us as much money, and they were a lot more fun.

I first found out about cheap package holidays from a friend who had bought an all inclusive package from her local travel agent. She was flying to Kauai, an exotic destination that I would have expected to be out of her range. She told me that the cheap package holiday was the only reason that she could go. Apparently, they had organized everything for her. Rather than waiting for last minute travel deals like she usually did, she was able to schedule her vacation at a convenient time months in advance. She had air travel booked at a discount rate, discount hotel rooms, and even a very reasonably priced tour of the islands arranged for the first day of her arrival. It all sounded too good to be true, but I thought we would check it out.

Since then, cheap package holidays abroad have been the only way to go. Although for local trips it still often makes sense to plan out every stage yourself, if you are going overseas or even across the country you had better go through travel agents. With a cheap holiday package, you save money on everything. The airlines and the hotels have deals together, and they set up cheap package holidays to boost their business by giving you discounts. It is good for you and it is good for them. You wouldn’t believe the savings until you try it!

Of course, a cheap holiday package is not always the way to go. Some cheap package holiday trips are made by second and third rate carriers who couldn’t get business otherwise. Whenever you are traveling overseas, you should check with the Better Business Bureau or some other reputable reporting agency to make sure that the people you’re dealing with do honest business. After all, no matter how much money you are saving, you won’t have a good time staying in a roach infested motel!

We have loved traveling long before we ever met each other or married and we were willing to go the cheap route rather than wait longer to save money so we have stayed in some rather poor quality rooms, even tents. We have, over the years, realized we can get cheap hotel rates and cheap tickets for flights with a little pre-planning.

When you take a vacation chances are that you want to do it in style. The majority of us save all year for a vacation and even if we think we can’t afford one of the five star hotels in our destination city, we can dream. It may actually be possible for almost everyone to budget for a stay at a luxury hotel if they keep a few small hints and tips in mind.

Regardless of how expensive or inexpensive a hotel is, there is one thing they all have in common. Having someone in every room, every night, is their primary goal. Whenever a room sits empty money is being lost. Five star hotels want to rent their rooms and that is why you can often find some terrific last minute deals on rooms in these luxury establishments.

The first step to finding a deal like this is to do some online research. Visiting the hotel’s website is a great idea as you can do a quick reservation search to find out their going rates for the period of time you are planning on staying. Then you can search several of the online discount travel sites for the five star hotels you are interested in. These sites often offer discounted rates and you may be able to save substantially over what you’d expect to pay directly from the hotel.

You should also bear in mind what time of year you are planning on traveling. Many destinations are more costly at specific times of year, including the summer months, the beginning of spring and over the winter holidays. If you want to book a room in one of the five star hotels in New York City over New Year, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be able to find a good deal. However, if you instead plan your trip there in September and stay home over the holidays, you are likely to keep a lot more money in your pocket.

Also, look into purchasing your airfare and accommodations from one vendor. This is typically done on those discount travel sites and it can actually prove to be a smart way to plan a trip. Although not all of the five star hotels are associated with these sites, many are and by purchasing a package vacation deal as opposed to just buying your plane ticket and then booking a hotel, you’ll have everything taken care of at once. The only drawback to this type of vacation planning is that you will have to pay for everything at the time of booking. There are cancellation fees in place so be very sure that you’ll be taking the trip at that time so you don’t waste any money.

We have traveled spontaneously and we have also made travel plans months in advance and it is just simple logic that says we would get cheap hotel rates when we plan early.

It seems that no matter how hard we try to stay in touch with family and friends, time passes by and before you know it you can go days, weeks and even months without contacting people that you care about. Each year I make a vow that I am going to do a better job of staying in touch, but before long I let the busyness of day to day life get in the way of reaching out to others.

A few weeks ago a friend and I decided that we were going to take off for an overnight stay together and just catch up with what is going on in each other’s life. We thought we could find cheap hotel rooms and stay close to home so that the majority of our time would not be spent on the road and so we would not have to spend a great deal of money. We needed cheap hotel rooms because we were each going to book one. I love my friend dearly, but she snores so loudly that I cannot get any sleep if I am in the same room with her. She is so self conscious about the snoring that she does not sleep well either, so it is better for us if we look for cheap hotel rooms and rent two of them.

There is a resort town within a couple hours drive of my home. There are many cute shops and several nice restaurants. This small town is located in the heart of the lakes area. During the weekends and in the summer the town is crowded, however in midweek during the off season the streets are empty. We had decided to go on this trip in early May. Most schools were still in session so the heavy tourist season had yet to start. There are several very nice resorts in the area, but we thought they would be too expensive. I told my friend that I would take care of booking the cheap hotel rooms. I decided it would not hurt to check the rates in the resorts for off season midweek. I could not believe the price. They were willing to rent the rooms to us for the same price as the discount hotel in town. The resort had an indoor pool we could use as well as a hot tub. The rates were so cheap because they were renovating the kitchen in the restaurant so there was no food in the building we were staying in, but there was pizza and burgers in the bar adjacent to our building. They also provided coffee makers in the rooms.

I booked the rooms and called my friend and told her that we had a place to stay. I did not give her any details. When we drove to the resort town she was very surprised when I pulled up to the resort. Our rooms were beautiful. They were connected by a door that the manager unlocked for us. Each room had a Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom and a deck over looking the lake. It was the best cheap rate place we had ever stayed in.

Travel Clothing

When you are planning a trip, the most challenging part might not be what sights to see first or which restaurant has the best deal on dinner. For men, women and children, the frustrating part might happen even before you leave home for the airport. Trying to pack a week’s worth of outfits into one suitcase can be virtually impossible. That’s why travel clothing is so appealing and becoming more and more popular.

We’ve all heard the horror stories about how much luggage goes missing each year. If you happen to be the victim of disappearing baggage you know exactly what it feels like. Not only does it ruin your entire vacation if the bag goes astray on the way to your destination, but if you lose it on the way back, all the souvenirs you collected may be just a distant memory. Packing light so you can carry-on your belongings removes all fear that they’ll be misplaced. With travel clothing you can pack everything you need in just one small bag.

Choosing a color scheme for the outfits you plan on wearing is really the key to packing light. This can be a challenge for women but if you give it some effort, you’ll find that you can pack fewer things and still enjoy just as many outfits. For example a pair of jeans can be worn both during the day and in the evening. With a white t-shirt they’ll keep you stylish and cool all day, when paired with a glittery black top you can go clubbing all night. The key to packing travel clothing is choosing things that can be worn more than once in different ways.

Another thing to consider is bringing fewer items and washing them while you are away. Some fabrics just don’t wash well. They need to be pressed after washing and drying and they’ll wrinkle even when in the suitcase. Leave these at home and instead opt for travel clothing that is wrinkle-resistant. Imagine placing a few shirts and skirts in a suitcase only to find them looking great once you arrive at your travel destination.

Also bear in mind when you are packing what the temperature is like at your final destination. If it’s warm, you are only going to need one pair of long pants along with one sweater for the evening breeze. If you wear these on the airplane, you’ll be affording yourself much more room within the bag. Layering while flying is also a great idea, as sometimes the travel clothing we wear during the trip leaves us either too hot or too cold while in flight. If you have on a t-shirt and a sweater you can easily remove the latter if you get too warm or put it back on if you feel chilly.

Smart planning is really all it takes. By mixing and matching and choosing easy to care for fabrics, your suitcase will be lighter and you’ll worry much less about what to wear while you are away.

Transportation is imperative in the world we inhabit. In fact, most of us need to commute somewhere each and every day. It may be 20 minutes down the road or a whopping 90 minutes into the city. It all depends on where you live and where you’re employed. And let’s not forget the countless other reasons we have to leave the house. In short, we rely on our vehicles quite regularly. But let’s not forget about air travel. Some folks rely on flying everyday for their careers. The rest of us resort to this method of travel for vacations and yearly trips. While the speed of air travel is ideal, airline ticket purchases now days are not so cheap. And sadly they continue to rise.

Do you recall your last flight? I certainly remember mine because it was only last month. I took a four day trip to Myrtle Beach from Cincinnati and it wasn’t cheap. My round-trip ticket cost me a whopping 780 dollars. YUCK! That’s way too much for a trip such as this. However, clearly with airline ticket purchases it depends on when you buy them. Timing is everything. Now, if you’re like most of us these days, then you probably rely on the Internet for deals and specials. Let’s face it; it’s easy and convenient to book a flight via the web. You just hop online and BAM, it’s all taken care of. Then there’s the dark side of online airline ticket purchases. First of all you have a number of vying travel websites.

There’s travelocity.com, cheaptickets.com, travelation.com, expedia.com and several more. So what you basically need to do is compare them all. Search for the flight you need on each of these travel websites, and pinpoint the best current deal. It’s a bit of a pain, but doesn’t take too long. Then there’s the time issue. When you research airline ticket purchases is always crucial. One day can make a huge difference. I was shocked to see a 400 dollar plane ticket skyrocket to 670 overnight. As ridiculous as this sounds, it’s still our reality.

Any time you choose to fly, remember to arrive a couple hours early. Chances are you’ll be the one that gets heavily searched at the security check, and then be held up for a good amount of time. You don’t want to miss your flight! And be prepared for delays. They come standard now! You might as well expect them. Planes wait in long lines to take off these days. Air travel just isn’t what it used to be.

Your yearly vacation time is coming up, your savings are in the bank to fund your trip and you just can’t wait to get on the road or to the airport. You may have decided last year where you’ll spend that vacation.

However, surprisingly, many people save their money with only a vague idea of what they’re going to do with that long-awaited time off or where they’re going to go! With our busy lives today, we may not find the time to water the garden, much less plan our vacation. As a result, you may just give a day or two of thought to what destinations you might visit which fall within the reach of your budget.

Here are some ideas on how you can widen your possibilities and perhaps take a trip you wouldn’t have thought viable.

Long before your trip, preferably months in advance, make a stop at your local travel agent’s office. You can do this on a trip to the mall or before grocery shopping. Travel agents have loads of printed information available on destinations an hour away, or half the world away. Travel agents stock travel brochures, booklets and information sheets and are more than happy to answer questions about any aspect of travel.

On your first visit, simply look through the racks of printed materials to see what catches your eye. Don’t even think about expense just yet. These travel brochures are intentionally enticing, usually glossy productions with photographs of famous sights, with copy designed to capture your interest. Designers of travel brochures do their job well. It’s likely you’ll leave with an armload to peruse at home that evening. You’ll find travel brochures to world destinations, such as London and Paris, amounting to small books filled with every offering the area has to offer.

These travel brochures may include information on package deals, including prices. If you find a deal that you might afford with a little tweaking of your savings plan now, keep it in mind, especially when your travel date is months away. Start subscriptions to ezines which compile travel deals, which will give you a good idea of what is really a rock-bottom price. If you’ve found several attractive destinations in your collection of travel brochures, these ezines allow you to pick up on these deals in a one-stop alert in each issue.

Remember that travel brochures naturally emphasize the up side of any destination. There will be no mentions of rampant thefts of the contents of rental cars abroad. When you’ve settled on your destination, go to the library and look over guidebooks which will fill you in on the skinny. You needn’t avoid a destination for these reasons, you only need be informed.

Travel brochures will serve you well in your dream vacation search. Once your investigation is complete, you’re ready to consult a travel agent to make your vacation a reality.
